Neurofeedback Program Overview

Brainwave Biofeedback at BATP

Behavior Analysis & Therapy Partners (BATP) is proud to have supported a Neurofeedback program implemented in two schools in South Philadelphia. This innovative approach is designed to enhance self-regulation and improve behavioral outcomes for children, particularly those struggling with attention, impulsivity, and other behavioral challenges. The program uses biofeedback to help individuals gain more control over their brainwave activity, leading to better focus, emotional regulation, and overall behavioral functioning.

ABAI Poster Presentation:

In May 2024, BATP co-founder Gary Ames presented a poster at the 50th Applied Behavior Analysis International Convention (ABAI), highlighting the successful outcomes of the Neurofeedback program implemented in South Philadelphia schools. The presentation sparked meaningful discussions on how biofeedback integrates with standard Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) practices.

Understanding Biofeedback:

During the convention, Gary Ames posed a thought-provoking question to attendees: Is biofeedback a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)? After engaging in discussion, the consensus was clear—it is. Gary used a simple demonstration to illustrate the connection: participants were asked to stand on one foot first with their eyes open, then with their eyes closed. The exercise demonstrated how increased self-awareness can lead to better self-control and improved self-regulation.

Expert Article on Neurofeedback & ABA:

Dr. Joseph Cautilli and Gary Ames co-authored an article that explores the alignment of neurofeedback with ABA principles.  Read the article: Neurofeedback is a Form of Applied Behavior Analysis (PDF).

Program Proposal & Outcomes:

Gary Ames authored a proposal to Community Behavioral Health (CBH) outlining an ideal project for the Neurofeedback program in schools. The proposal discussed key outcomes from the program, including improvements in multiple areas:

  • Increased:
    • Attention, sleep quality, school attendance, memory, relaxation, social skills, and academic performance (grades).
  • Decreased:
    • Stress, impulsivity, disruptive behavior, violence, school suspensions, negativity, tardiness, learning disabilities, and medication reliance.

BrainPaint System Benefits:

The proposal emphasized the benefits of the BrainPaint system for neurofeedback training. This system is known for being:

Program Outcomes:

Our program tracked the outcomes of students who participated in the neurofeedback training sessions.  The results were strongly beneficial. Participants demonstrated significant improvements across various behavioral, emotional, mental and academic areas.

Conclusion:

The findings from our Neurofeedback research show that this intervention is broadly effective, yielding significant and durable results. Neurofeedback has proven to be a valuable tool in enhancing self-regulation and behavioral outcomes in children. But it is not yet offered as part of BATP services.

Services

Our Service

At Behavior Analysis & Therapy Partners (BATP), we are committed to offering a broad spectrum of professional services, all designed to meet the unique needs of individuals and families. We regularly update our offerings to ensure we are addressing the evolving needs of our community. If you cannot find what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Our team is here to help!

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

At BATP, we provide Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to addressing challenging behaviors and promoting skill development. This method is particularly effective in improving the quality of life for children and young adults.

The process begins with a detailed Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), which includes interviews, observations, and assessments. Based on this, a Treatment Plan is developed by a Behavior Consultant.

Your dedicated care team may include a Behavior Consultant, one-on-one specialists, Behavior Health Technicians, and potentially a Mobile Therapist. We ensure that all team members are highly trained and adhere to rigorous standards, delivering interventions that are both evidence-based and effective.

Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS) (Ages 5-21)

Our Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS) program serves children, youth, and young adults aged 5 to 21 who do not have a primary diagnosis of autism. This program is designed for individuals facing challenges such as psychological trauma, ADHD, addictions, depression, anger, and other behavioral issues.

The services provided in this program are comprehensive and may include:

  • Group Therapy
  • Referrals to Summer Work Programs
  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

Our approach is collaborative, involving coordination with other professionals such as psychiatrists for medication management and access to social services to address everyday challenges.

Each client’s treatment is personalized, guided by relevant documents like a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), a 504 Plan, or an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), ensuring that interventions are specifically tailored to meet their needs.

Early Intervention (Ages Birth-5)

Our Early Intervention program is designed for children ages 2 to 5 and utilizes Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to promote early developmental milestones. These services are primarily delivered in daycare centers and aim to foster growth in key areas such as social skills, communication, and emotional regulation.

Each child's program is often guided by an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). To ensure holistic development, we collaborate with a range of professionals, including Occupational Therapists, Speech & Language Therapists, Educators, and Medical professionals.

Our Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) work one-on-one with each child, providing focused support and care. We are proud to partner with Elwyn and the State of Pennsylvania to provide these critical services and promote positive outcomes for every child we serve.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) (Ages 2-7)

Our Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) program is a short-term, evidence-based treatment designed to enhance the relationship between parents and their young children, specifically for ages 2 to 7 years old.

PCIT focuses on improving both child behavior and parenting skills in a way that fosters positive, supportive interactions. The program is structured around working directly with both the child and the caregiver to address conduct problems and increase compliance with parental guidance.

Benefits of PCIT:

  • Reduced Parenting Stress: Parents will gain tools to effectively manage challenging behaviors, leading to less stress in daily interactions.
  • Improved Parenting Skills: PCIT teaches parents effective strategies to increase positive behavior and reduce negative behaviors in their children.
  • Stronger Parent-Child Relationships: The program helps build a nurturing, responsive relationship between parent and child, strengthening emotional bonds.

Our Goal:

The ultimate goal of PCIT is to foster positive growth within the family dynamic. By empowering parents with the skills they need to manage behaviors and improve their relationship with their child, we aim to transform strained interactions into sources of healing and mutual support.

Through PCIT, we strive to promote healthier family dynamics, reduce adversity, and provide families with the tools they need to create lasting, positive change.

If you’re interested in learning more about how PCIT can help your family, or to find out if it’s the right fit for your needs, please contact us to schedule a consultation. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
